Pilates
Pilates is an exercise system which is focused on strengthening and lengthening muscles, building strength without the bulk, improving agility and flexibility. It is clinically proven to develop spatial awareness, proprioception and balance as well as breathing control. It plays a very important role in the prevention of injury and (with the correct medical advice) can be used as an excellent fun rehabilitation tool from an injury. Pilates can also play an important role in the non physical aspects; in stress relieving, improving concentration and well being.
This form of exercise can be carried out by everybody of all different fitness and strength levels. Commonly, Pilates is associated with very fit, flexible people and appears popular throughout the dancing, gymnastics and theatrical professions. However, Pilates can be adapted for people who have limited movement or who use a wheel chair. In 2003 it was recognised that regular Pilates reduces the risk of hospitalisation in older adults, and reduces the risk of the body deconditioning in older years.
Pilates was developed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates from a very young age was a sufferer of asthma, rickets disease and rheumatic fever. He was determined to make himself stronger against all medical odds. He dedicated himself to building stronger both his body and mind and hence Pilates was founded. Joseph Pilates himself stated
“You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions and have a completely new body in 30 sessions”.
At Vitality our fully qualified Pilates instructors will work with you to develop your individual goals, whether physical or non-physical. The Pilates sessions will involve combined standing, sitting and lying exercises (on a mat provided). The main emphasis of the classes are to build core strength (chest, abdomen and back), working out to the extremities (arms and legs). Your instructor will actively participate in the class, as well as providing you with individual advice. Should you require a more individual session, Vitality’s instructors are able to provide you with one to one Pilates sessions on request.
Pilates Sculpt
Pilates Sculpt is a class designed by Vitality which combines the techniques of Pilates linked with resistance work in the form of free weights, resistance bands and passive stretches. This will further increase your activity levels and progress your muscle strengthening and lengthening capabilities in a more challenging approach.
